THE AMERICA-RDASHIANS.
Let me first preface by saying sorry that I’m having to subject America to this level, but it’s just for comparative purposes. Also, this pun was brought to you by the letter P.
So, the Kardashians are the family that everybody loves to hate. And whether the justification stands that anybody truly cares to keep up with them, although I’d say being 9 seasons into a reality show is proof enough, I feel like America as a whole, has become some virtual extension of the Kardashian family to me. And I find myself running mental circles trying to keep up with everything from American sports to American pop culture.
Between the Richard Sherman post-game interview, and the mugshot of Justin “MileyCyrus” Bieber, a part of me wants to keep up with the nuances of what the media deem as “news”, and subsequently, what you all end up relaying through social media. The other part of me is laughing at the idea that we get our panties in a bunch over things that shouldn’t do so much as to give us a hiccup. A part of the problem is the virtual platform we’re all given (on Facebook) to broadcast why a problem is a problem to other problems, and the problematic perpetuation to those problems. Exactly. It’s exhausting!
The relevancy of the irrelevant is the basis of what constitutes American pop culture. But in all its embellished fabrication, why am I so addicted?
Being abroad again has taught me what it means to live in the present. I feel this liberating disconnect from so many digital mediums that force-fed me every detail of pop culture that I felt was so crucial to carry on a decent water cooler conversation. But no. I love not getting my Yahoo! text alerts telling me Lindsay Lohan has a new addiction movie role. I’m okay with not knowing who’s dating which A-lister’s boyfriend’s cousin’s dad.
Instead, tell me about the advancements being made in our country. The ongoing efforts to better our nation, fund education, and create more job opportunities for the American people. Now THAT’S some news I’d like to keep up with.
I love America and every time I meet another local out here, I’m reminded just how lucky I am to be from the states, as some seem to visualize it as this Utopian world of California beaches, New Yorkan buildings, and Vegas entertainment. Slightly off. But hey, go ‘Merica.
In other news...
Today also marks 2 weeks since I’ve touched down in the U.K. and I can finally say with confidence, that I’m rested and fully functioning again. Everything is seemingly falling into place and because I’m known to jinx myself, if you’d like to knock on wood for me, that’d be great.
So by this time tomorrow, I’ll get to watch the Grammy’s and make sense of the buzz that will inevitably be relayed in 942 different ways on my Facebook news feed. God bless The Americardashians. To keep up with you, or not to keep up with you, that is the question...
