So falling in love abroad is pretty much inevitable these days... but not exactly how you might think. Love is a special (sort of hell and) concept ain't it? Your heart, no matter how hard you try to fight it, leads you down this self-destructive path of unwarranted emotions and illogical behavior. Sorry, maybe that’s just my ex now that I think about it.
Anywho, I'm at the age where all my friends are in committed relationships with their spouse, girlfriend, boyfriend, or Netflix sitcoms, and all are equally beautiful (word up to the latter).
And when it comes to living abroad, you won't fall short of these feelings -- but not in the way like everyone else.
You see, when you move abroad... you fall in love hard, but not always with a person. You fall in love with everyday things you took for granted back in America.
You fall in love with cultures you never knew existed.
You fall in love with food you never knew you had an appetite for.
You fall in love with places that look like they’re straight out of a movie.
You fall in love with customs that remind you to cherish the roots of your history.
You fall in love with dances that bring out the rhythm in even the most uncoordinated souls.
You fall in love with regrets, because despite them, they remind you that you’re human, and were born to make mistakes.
You fall in love with mystery, because you hate the fear of it, yet welcome the freedom the lack of a 5-year plan brings.
You fall in love with experiences, because no matter how crazy, unexpected, or incredible your journey was, no other person will ever have one that’s identical.
But just like falling in love with a person, this infatuation suffers all the stress and heartaches as a romantic relationship does.
You fall in love with a place only to find out it's more expensive to live in than when you first arrived. You fall in love with a food, but it makes you gain weight in every other place but(t) the flattering ones. You fall in love with a new tradition, but at the expense of abandoning your own.
Love is all about compromise. No matter the circumstances.
So the next time you feel your heart tugging at a new place, food, or culture that you’ve fallen in love with, let it happen. Live in those magical moments for as long as you can, because not all loves are meant to last (looking at you, 50% divorce rates). But if you do find yourself inseparable from a country, by all means, follow your heart and live there. If it’s meant to be, time will tell. And if it’s not, there are plenty more countries in the sea. At least I think that’s how the saying goes...
